ATOMIC HABITS BY
JAMES CLEAR
Just in case this is
the first time you are getting to be aware of this book; you should know that, as
the title suggests, it is mainly about habit formation and breaking. The question
this book is answering is how can one form a habit and at the same time, how
can one stop a habit. It is arranged chapter wise meticulously with steps to
follow.
I have read the
book twice now. The first time I was all about gaining knowledge on habit
formation. About a year later, after struggling to maintain some desirable
habits in vain. I resolved to read the book again, this time implementing each
nugget of knowledge as I leisurely walked through the wisdom of James Clear. I dare
say this book is a masterpiece. One of the habits I really wanted to form and
stick to was regular and planned writing. To date I write at least 500 words a
day, I am aiming to get to at least 2500 words a day within six months. I am
super confident I will achieve it.
As much as I confidently
believe this book is a masterpiece, I would not say it is perfect. However, there
is only one thing I think could have been done to improve on its practicability;
the steps could have deliberate number of times indication that one is advised
to do them. For example, it could instruct that after the first day of
implementing the second law of behaviour change; Make it attractive, pursue
this law for at least seven times before continuing with your reading. I believe
the number of times per step instruction would make the learning more practical
and engaging.
I ardour how James
Clear has used simple and easy to understand language. The way he argues his
points clearly indicates Clear poured substantial amount to research and that
he is not just yapping out things. Also, the real-life scenarios he keeps using
cements the practicability of the habit formation process. The steps are
meticulously written in an order such that one cannot miss an iota of it.
I had so many
favourite lines, quotes and paragraphs from the book. It is close to impossible
to choose one. But if I am placed at gunpoint, I think I would go with one from
chapter 11 which centres on the third law of behaviour change; Make it easy.
“the most effective
form of learning is practice, not planning.
Focus on taking
action, not being in motion
The amount of time
you have been performing a habit is not as important as the number of times you
have performed it.”
I with full
confidence recommend this book to you who is looking to form a new desirable
habit. Or to you who wants to break an undesirable habit. This book is your
ultimate companion in such a journey.
And oh! James
Clear has weekly newsletter full of sage. You should subscribe to it.
This book changed my life and continues to. Whoever hasn't read it is sorry to say, wasting their life.
